Compensation:

$.90 per loaded mile
$.82 per empty (deadhead) mile

Fuel Surcharge: Paid weekly on a per loaded mile basis.
Weekly Deductions: $115.00 includes liability and cargo insurance
Fuel Card Supplier: TCH - Deducted from settlement weekly. Discounts at pump.
License Plates and Permits: Permits provided by company. License/Registration responsibility of owner/operator. Financial assistance available if needed.

How We Started

Carla Luig, president and chief executive officer of First Choice Transport in Fort Worth, will never forget the day she started her trucking and transportation business.

The company’s first load was scheduled to be picked up at 6 a.m. in Albuquerque. The date was Sept. 11, 2001.

The driver – who still works for First Choice – managed to complete the job despite the tragedy and confusion of that fateful day.

“Our very first hurdle was 9/11. I didn’t know what would happen with our insurance or our drivers,” Luig said. “It was hard to get a bank loan after 9/11, too. But we kept going. Once we got established with a great bank it’s been gangbusters from there.”

Today, 10 years later, the transportation firm has grown from two employees to 19, from three owner-operator trucks to 85, from zero to 175 trailers and from zero revenue to $19.5 million. The company earned the No. 80 spot on the Business Press’ Top 100 Private Companies of 2011 list, up from No. 107 the previous year.
